Why Color Contrast Matters
Over 1 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. Good color contrast isn't just a legal requirement — everyone deserves to read your content.
What is Contrast Ratio?
Contrast ratio measures the difference in luminance (brightness) between two colors. It's expressed as a ratio from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (maximum contrast).
WCAG AA vs. AAA
AA (minimum standard):
- Normal text: 4.5:1 ratio
- Large text (18pt+ or 14pt+ bold): 3:1 ratio
AAA (enhanced standard):
- Normal text: 7:1 ratio
- Large text: 4.5:1 ratio
Why It Matters
Sufficient contrast is essential for people with low vision, color blindness, and older users. It also improves readability for everyone, especially on mobile devices and in bright environments.
Tips for Accessible Colors
- Don't rely on color alone to convey meaning
- Use patterns, icons, or text labels alongside color
- Test with colorblind simulation tools (like this one!)
- Check contrast ratios early in your design process
